2 Killed in Heber City Head-On Accident

Fatal head-on car accident on State Route 40 near Strawberry Reservoir in Heber City, Utah

Box truck overcorrection on highway results in fifth serious collision in the Strawberry Reservoir corridor

Two men died Saturday, March 14, in a head-on crash on State Route 40 near Strawberry Reservoir in Heber City, Utah, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

A box truck crossed the center line and hit their pickup truck, according to the patrol.

The crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. near milepost 51.

An eastbound box truck drifted off the right side of the road, police said. The driver then overcorrected, causing the truck to swerve across the center line.

The box truck then hit a westbound pickup truck carrying two men. Both men in the pickup, described as being in their 30s, died at the scene, police said.

Rescuers took the box truck driver to a local hospital in stable condition.

The crash remains under investigation, authorities said.

Investigators will review the box truck's service history and the driver's electronic logging device, police said.

The Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) is leading the investigation into the fatal collision. Cpl. Luis Silva reported that the incident was initiated when the eastbound box truck failed to maintain its lane and left the roadway to the right. The driver’s subsequent overcorrection caused the vehicle to cross the center line and into the path of the pickup truck. Following the impact, authorities filtered traffic through the eastbound lane to maintain movement while investigators processed the scene. No charges have been announced as the UHP continues to analyze the mechanics of the overcorrection and vehicle telemetry.

National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "I've seen families blindsided by how quickly a simple commute turns into a heartbeat of loss. It's devastating that left-turn crashes account for over twenty percent of all fatal intersection accidents."

In Utah, when a fatal accident involves a commercial vehicle like a box truck, the legal landscape is governed by complex liability rules and federal safety standards. Surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and financial support. These cases often necessitate a forensic review of the commercial driver's logs, vehicle maintenance records, and the company’s hiring practices to determine if negligence played a role. It is highly recommended that families consult with an experienced legal advocate to navigate the interplay between state traffic laws and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims following such a devastating loss.
