Aman Kumar arrested in Fresno hit-and-run pedestrian crash

31-year-old man faces felony charges after allegedly using bike lane to bypass traffic
A 4-year-old boy was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash on Peach Avenue near Nevada Avenue on April 28, according to the police department.
Aman Kumar, 31, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after witnesses provided his license plate number to investigators. He later admitted to striking the child and fleeing the scene, authorities said.
Northbound traffic had stopped as the child approached the road from a nearby yard. Kumar entered the bike lane to bypass the stopped cars and struck the child before driving away.
The boy was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center. He remains in critical but stable condition.
Officers impounded the vehicle for evidence as the investigation continues.
Families coping with the sudden critical injury of a child face overwhelming emotional and financial burdens, especially when the at-fault driver flees the scene. While the criminal justice system penalizes the suspect, parallel civil investigations are important for victims' families to secure resources for medical recovery.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence, Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must be thoroughly examined. These procedures are necessary for helping those injured receive the monetary compensation they deserve as they recover from an injury."
How do bike lane violations affect pedestrian safety?
The illegal use of bike lanes to bypass traffic creates severe blind spots for both drivers and pedestrians. When vehicles unexpectedly enter spaces designated for vulnerable road users, the risk of collisions increases significantly. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, one in four pedestrian deaths results from hit-and-run crashes, highlighting the systemic dangers of drivers fleeing the scene.
What happens when a driver flees a crash scene in Fresno?
Fleeing the scene of an injury collision is a felony in California. Beyond criminal prosecution, hit-and-run drivers face significant civil liability. Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of Bond Legal, noted, "You might be in shock, and anything said at the time may lower the chances of getting justice. Hiring an attorney will be the best route to protect your rights,"
For parents of injured minors, understanding the distinction between the state's criminal prosecution of the driver and their own right to pursue a civil claim is a vital step toward accountability.
California personal injury framework
California follows a pure comparative fault system. Injured parties may recover damages reduced by their percentage of fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of the crash.
Damages include economic losses (medical bills, lost income, rehabilitation) and non-economic losses (pain, suffering, emotional distress).
