Bystanders immediately rendered life-saving measures until emergency personnel arrived. Fire department paramedics pronounced the man, Hira, dead at the scene.

Authorities closed all westbound lanes of the highway for several hours to accommodate the investigation. The road reopened to traffic by 6:30 p.m.

The victim, who was in town for a business conference, is survived by his wife and two children.

The crash remains under investigation.

Why did the collision occur on East Coast Highway?

Families navigating the sudden loss of a loved one face a complex path to understanding exactly how a fatal collision unfolded. In pedestrian accidents such as this, investigators look closely at intersection dynamics, right-of-way rules, and traffic signal timing.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Drivers have a clear legal obligation to yield at crossings, and ignoring pedestrians in a marked crosswalk can carry serious consequences. Fatal crashes at intersections often come down to one distracted or impatient moment behind the wheel."

"Legal counsel engaged early moves to preserve camera footage, document road conditions, and challenge any insurance offer made before a full investigation concludes," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,080 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024, representing 18% of all crash death.

Did weather or road conditions play a role in Newport Beach?

Beyond signal timing and driver behavior, authorities will assess whether weather-related factors or commercial fleet operations contributed to the collision environment. Crash reconstructionists routinely examine environmental factors, including weather-related visibility issues, glare, and road surface conditions at the time of impact.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.

"Funeral costs, lost household income, and ongoing financial strain all fall heavily on surviving relatives after a fatal crash. A legal team works to document every measurable economic loss so compensation claims fully reflect the complete and accurate financial picture," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
