Artanian Shaw Killed in Tacoma Pedestrian Accident

The 28-year-old man was struck by a vehicle on South Tacoma Way
Artanian Shaw, 28, of Tacoma, was killed in a pedestrian crash on South Tacoma Way on June 15, according to the Tacoma Police Department.
Detectives are examining the scene to determine why the vehicle struck the man. The driver remained at the crash site and cooperated with officers. No arrests were made.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the cause of death as multiple blunt-force injuries. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead before he could be transported to a hospital.
The collision occurred around 5:28 p.m. in the 400 block of the road. Traffic was diverted while investigators cleared the area.
While the Tacoma Police Department continues its investigation, authorities will review all potential factors, including whether weather-related conditions reduced visibility or traction.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Crashes involving pedestrians often reveal how poor lighting, driver fatigue, and flawed roadway design magnify risks, leaving individuals defenseless against severe impact forces."
"An attorney may coordinate reconstruction experts, preserve video evidence, and manage insurance disputes, ensuring every detail is examined while supporting surviving relatives," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
In 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 7,080 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States, accounting for about 18% of all roadway fatalities.
What role might weather-related factors play on South Tacoma Way?
Investigators will look at the specific conditions at 5:28 p.m. on the day of the crash. Even minor weather-related changes can impact a driver's ability to see someone crossing the street.
As police piece together the timeline, the family of Shaw faces a sudden loss.
Washington wrongful death statute
"Wrongful death claims require careful navigation, and legal counsel safeguards evidence, manages communication, and provides grieving families with structured support that balances accountability with compassion during difficult proceedings following a fatal crash," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
Families pursuing these claims can seek damages for medical bills, funeral expenses, loss of future income, and loss of companionship. Washington law generally requires wrongful death actions to be filed within three years of the date of the crash.
