The 2-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle pulling out of a parking space at the Hawthorne Place Apartments

A 2-year-old boy died after he was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of an Independence apartment complex.

Aziel Zermeno was riding a scooter outside the Hawthorne Place Apartments on Saturday when he left the sidewalk and entered the path of a 2017 Cadillac XT5 pulling forward out of a parking space, according to police.

The vehicle struck and ran over the toddler. A neighbor performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The collision remains under investigation. No charges have been announced against the driver.

A growing memorial of toys and shoes now sits at the scene. Family members have established a GoFundMe and organized a car wash to assist with funeral expenses.

The loss of a young child deeply affects the surrounding community, leaving grieving families searching for answers while facing unexpected funeral costs.

"Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

Investigators will examine the Cadillac's sightlines, speed, and the driver's actions leading up to the impact. Safety analysts point to driver inattention and blind spots in residential parking areas as recurring hazards.

"Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate an accident case and prove negligence," said Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal

The crash adds to a rising toll across the state. Missouri recorded a record 148 pedestrian deaths in 2024, representing a 16% increase from the previous year, according to the Department of Transportation. Families involved in accidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.
