The 29-year-old Bourbonnais resident was struck by a passenger vehicle on 4000 East Road

Bailey C. Caldwell, 29, of Bourbonnais, was killed in a bicycle crash on 4000 East Road near 6000 North Road, east of Manteno, Illinois, on June 23, according to the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office.‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌

Deputies and paramedics arrived at the scene around 7:41 a.m. to find the rider unconscious in the road after a collision with a passenger vehicle. Rescuers rushed the victim to an area hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The Illinois State Police are conducting a full crash reconstruction. A portion of 4000 East Road was closed to traffic for several hours while troopers examined the scene.

The crash adds to a rising toll across the state, as Illinois recorded 41 cyclist death in 2023, a sharp increase from previous years.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the driver of the passenger vehicle or whether any charges are pending.

What is the status of the crash reconstruction?

Investigators routinely examine vehicle damage, tire marks, and roadway evidence to establish right-of-way and vehicle speeds at the time of impact.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Determining how fast a vehicle was traveling at impact becomes critical to a fatal bicycle investigation, since speed can change how a collision unfolds and how survivable an injury might have been. Reconstruction specialists rely on skid marks, debris patterns, and damage analysis to answer that question."

"Serving as an advocate, an attorney works closely with those experts to protect financial interests of surviving relatives," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do rural road conditions impact bicycle safety?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 1,075 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles in the United States in 2024.

While urban areas see a higher volume of crashes, rural collisions frequently result in fatal outcomes due to vehicle speeds and lighting conditions.

Illinois wrongful death statute

Under 740 ILCS 180, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Illinois applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of society, and grief.

"Insurance companies sometimes move fast with early settlement offers, hoping grieving families will accept quickly without asking many questions. And a legal team steps in to slow that pace, reviewing every term carefully before survivors sign away future financial protection," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
