Preliminary information indicates the driver struck Mork while she was walking in a marked crosswalk. The driver remained at the scene, was cooperative, and showed no signs of impairment. No charges have been filed.

St. Paul Fire Department medics transported Mork to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries following the 6:15 p.m. collision. She remained hospitalized for two weeks before her death.

A fundraising campaign established for her medical care described Mork as a loving mother and grandmother. She was known for her deep care for her family and animals. The community has rallied to support her surviving children and grandchildren.

The crash remains under investigation.

Minnesota recorded 59 pedestrian deaths and 735 pedestrian injury crashes in 2024, according to state data. Roughly one‑third of pedestrian crashes in the state resulted in severe injuries or fatalities.

Families navigating the sudden loss of a loved one face immense grief, especially when a routine walk ends in tragedy. While the driver showed no signs of impairment, investigators will examine environmental factors, including whether weather-related visibility issues or glare contributed to the failure to yield at the marked crosswalk.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Crosswalks are supposed to give pedestrians a protected path, but that protection only works when drivers yield. Speed changes everything at an intersection, and even a few miles per hour above the limit can eliminate a driver's stopping distance entirely."

"Legal counsel in these cases focuses on roadway design and whether all responsible parties have been identified and properly addressed," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

Why did the vehicle fail to yield on Hamline Avenue?

Law enforcement will reconstruct the collision to determine the exact sequence of events. This includes analyzing vehicle speed, braking patterns, and potential weather-related obstructions that may have obscured the driver's view of the crosswalk.

"The financial weight a fatal crash places on surviving families is something most people never anticipate. Lost income, immediate expenses, and the cost of rebuilding a household can accumulate rapidly while families are in the stages of grief," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"A legal team steps in to document every economic loss and ensure insurance carriers are providing every dollar of coverage owed."

Minnesota wrongful death statute

Under Minn. Stat. § 573.02, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Minnesota applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and guidance, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
