19-year-old driver arrested after two-vehicle crash in Watsonville leaves two people dead

Carlos Angeles of Soquel was killed in a two-vehicle crash on East Lake Avenue near Casserly Road in Watsonville on Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍

Officers arrested the 19-year-old driver of the second vehicle at the scene as investigators examine whether alcohol or drugs played a role. Fire crews spent nearly an hour cutting the roof off the suspect's white Infiniti to extricate trapped passengers, while the other vehicle stopped beneath a dirt-shoulder billboard with catastrophic damage.

A 17-year-old passenger in the vehicle driven by the Soquel teen also died at the scene. Two people from the Infiniti suffered major injuries, with one airlifted to a hospital and another taken by ambulance to an out-of-county trauma center.

Debris, including engine components and shattered glass, littered the intersection. Authorities closed Highway 152 in both directions for several hours, forcing drivers to detour via Highway 129.

The crash remains under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported U.S. motor vehicle deaths fell to 36,640 in 2025, a 6.7 percent drop from 2024. Officials said the fatality rate declined to 1.10 per 100 million miles traveled.

Why was the Infiniti driver arrested on East Lake Avenue?

The arrest of the other driver highlights the severe consequences of the crash. While criminal charges punish the offender, families of victims like Angeles often seek parallel civil accountability.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Impaired driving remains a leading cause of fatal two-vehicle crashes, yet toxicology results do not always tell the complete story when other variables go unexamined."

"Legal counsel may push for a broader forensic review, examining vehicle speed data and signal timing alongside chemical findings to ensure surviving families receive an honest accounting of what happened," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do criminal charges impact civil claims for the Angeles family?

When a driver faces criminal charges, the investigation often yields critical evidence for civil claims, including police reconstruction data.

According to Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, "Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a victim during this difficult time, protecting their legal rights while ensuring that at-fault drivers are held accountable for their reckless actions."

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.

"Wrongful death claims require careful documentation and strict adherence to filing deadlines that can differ across states. Legal counsel guides surviving relatives through every procedural requirement, working to ensure the claim is complete, thoroughly supported, and submitted well on time," added Formica, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
