Carolyn Hunt-Loga Killed in Daphne Truck Accident

Carolyn Hunt-Loga truck accident on I-10 Bayway, Daphne, Alabama

Construction zone lane closures preceded the deadly multi-vehicle collision on the I-10 Bayway

Carolyn Hunt-Loga, of Slidell, Louisiana, was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on the I-10 Bayway near Highway 90 in Daphne on May 22, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍

Construction signs had directed nighttime traffic into the right lane before the impact occurred. A pickup truck crashed into a Hunt-Loga's passenger car, forcing it forward into a commercial tractor-trailer. Two people survived the wreck. Rescuers airlifted a passenger from the crushed car and the driver of the pickup to a local hospital.

Traffic on the westbound Bayway came to a standstill as crews worked to clear the wreckage. Troopers continue to investigate the sequence of events.

Their conditions remain unclear. The collision reflects a broader national trend, as National Safety Council data shows 70% of deaths in large-truck crashes are passengers of other vehicles.

How do construction zones impact Interstate 10 crash risks?

The Bayway serves as a critical artery connecting Mobile and Baldwin counties, where sudden traffic shifts often catch drivers off guard. When lanes merge for nighttime roadwork, the risk of rear-end collisions increases significantly, especially when commercial vehicles are present in the backup.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Modern vehicles are equipped with event data recorders that capture speed, braking activity, and other critical information in the moments before a crash."

This data can be invaluable in understanding exactly what occurred, but it must be retrieved and preserved quickly before it is overwritten or lost, Bond added.

What happens next in the ALEA investigation?

"Legal counsel engaged early after a fatal roadway crash can make a significant difference in the outcome for surviving relatives. An attorney can issue formal preservation notices to prevent critical evidence from disappearing, retain qualified reconstruction specialists, and review all available data before conditions change," stated Stefano Formica, who serves as a national legal analyst for Accident News and is of counsel at Bond Legal.

Troopers will examine skid marks, vehicle data recorders, and construction zone signage to determine why the pickup failed to stop. Investigators must establish whether adequate warning was provided to drivers approaching the lane closure and whether speed or distraction played a role in the fatal impact.

Alabama wrongful death statute

Under Ala. Code § 6-5-410, surviving family members of a person killed in a traffic collision may file a wrongful death action in Alabama. The state applies contributory negligence (one of only 4 states) when determining liability. The statute of limitations for wrongful death claims is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages under Alabama's wrongful death statute may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral and burial expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering. Alabama law designates specific parties — typically a surviving spouse, children, or parents — as eligible to bring a wrongful death action.
