Dawson Debolt Killed in Colorado Springs Motorcycle Accident

The 23-year-old rider died after a car made an unprotected left turn into his path on East Fillmore Street
Dawson Debolt, 23, was killed in a motorcycle crash on East Fillmore Street at North Prospect Street on June 1, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The Major Crash Team is investigating the collision, which occurred around 8 a.m. west of Palmer Park. An eastbound car attempted to make an unprotected left turn into a parking lot and crossed directly into the path of the westbound motorcycle driven by Debolt.
Debolt was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was not injured.
Colorado DOT reports a record-high 165 motorcycle death in 2024, a grim trend reflected in the city's latest fatal collision.
No charges have been announced. Police are asking witnesses to contact the department.
Why are unprotected left turns so dangerous for riders?
Intersection collisions involving unprotected left turns represent much of motorcycle death nationwide. When a vehicle turns across oncoming traffic lanes, drivers frequently fail to accurately judge the speed and distance of approaching motorcycles.
In motorcycle accidents such as this, crash reconstruction investigators careful examine the turning vehicle's line of sight, the motorcycle's right of way, and the exact point of impact to establish liability.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Crash reconstruction can establish where vehicles were and how fast they were moving, but it does not always answer what a driver was focused on when turning. Phone records and in-vehicle system logs can shed light on that question."
"Legal counsel pursues all of it when building the most complete picture available for surviving families," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
How do local crash trends compare to state data?
The corner of East Fillmore Street and North Prospect Street is part of a broader pattern of rising traffic death in the region. With Colorado Springs recording a sharp increase in traffic deaths compared to the previous year, local authorities continue to monitor high-risk corridors.
Families who lose a loved one in these sudden collisions often face immediate financial and emotional burdens while waiting for official crash reports to be finalized.
Colorado wrongful death statute
Under C.R.S. § 13-21-201, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Colorado applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and net pecuniary loss.
"Insurance adjusters sometimes shift focus to what a rider was wearing rather than looking at how the collision happened. Helmet use matters for injury severity, but it does not explain away a driver who failed to yield," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
"Legal counsel handling a serious motorcycle case builds the record around the picture of what caused the crash."
