Detrick Arnold hit-and-run accident on Buffaloe Road, Raleigh, North Carolina

Police search for large SUV after 32-year-old pedestrian is struck by multiple vehicles on Buffaloe Road

Detrick Arnold, 32, of Raleigh, was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Buffaloe Road in Raleigh, North Carolina, early Saturday, according to police.‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌

A large SUV struck Arnold in the 3300 block of the road around 3:09 a.m. and continued outbound without stopping, investigators said. At least one additional vehicle then ran over him while he was down.

Officers arrived to find the victim dead at the scene. Police have not said whether he was crossing the street or standing in the travel lanes when the initial impact occurred.

The crash remains under active criminal investigation as detectives search for the SUV driver.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the fleeing vehicle to contact Raleigh CrimeStoppers.

Why did the SUV driver flee the scene on Buffaloe Road?

While Raleigh detectives work to identify the large SUV that left the scene, the criminal nature of fleeing a fatal collision complicates the aftermath for grieving families. Identifying the driver is the first step toward accountability.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Pedestrians face inherently severe injury exposure in roadway collisions, and when a driver flees afterward, surviving families face an added burden of uncertainty."

"Legal counsel helps families understand their civil rights during active criminal investigations, ensuring no procedural delay undermines their ability to pursue accountability through independent channels," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do multiple vehicle impacts affect the investigation?

Because at least one additional vehicle struck the victim after the initial impact, crash reconstructionists must untangle a complex sequence of events. Determining the exact timeline and visibility conditions at 3:09 a.m. is critical.

Families of hit-and-run victims are often left waiting for answers while the criminal justice system pursues the suspect. Independent investigations frequently run parallel to police efforts to ensure all evidence is preserved.

North Carolina wrongful death statute

Under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 28A-18-2, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. North Carolina applies contributory negligence. The statute of limitations is 2 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of services and companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.

"Wrongful death claims provide a civil pathway for surviving families after fatal hit-and-run crashes, independent of any criminal outcome. Burdens of proof in civil proceedings differ from criminal standards, meaning accountability through the courts remains possible even when prosecution faces obstacles," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"Legal counsel guides families, identifies liable parties, and builds the strongest civil case."
