Doris L. Mace Killed in Canaan Township Car Accident

The Rittman resident died after a three-vehicle collision at State Route 83 and State Route 604
Doris L. Mace, 61, of Rittman, was killed in a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of state routes 83 and 604 in Canaan Township on Monday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The morning crash occurred when a southbound Chevrolet Trax failed to yield the right of way while attempting a left turn onto eastbound State Route 604, striking a northbound Chrysler Voyager. The collision sent the Chrysler off the east side of the road and into a field. The Trax was then redirected into a southbound Chevrolet Trailblazer.
Mace died at the scene. She was a passenger in the Chrysler and was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Trax suffered serious injuries. The driver and another passenger in the Chrysler suffered minor injuries, while the driver of the Trailblazer had no apparent injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been announced.
Intersection collisions remain a persistent danger on rural corridors. When drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming traffic during left turns, the resulting impacts often leave passengers with little protection against the sudden transfer of kinetic energy.
"Intersection collisions often occur when drivers underestimate how quickly oncoming vehicles approach, creating sudden right‑of‑way conflicts. Poor lighting or obstructed views can magnify those risks, leaving little chance to avoid impact. Visibility challenges and driver distraction can make those moments catastrophic," said Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal.
In the aftermath, legal counsel may preserve electronic data, coordinate crash reconstruction, and secure witness documentation. That process helps families manage insurance disputes while ensuring evidence remains intact and surviving relatives receive protection and guidance, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
The sudden loss of a loved one in a traffic collision creates immediate emotional and logistical challenges for surviving relatives. While investigators work to finalize their reconstruction of the Canaan Township crash, families often face mounting questions about liability and insurance coverage.
According to Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal, "Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights. Legal counsel can provide clarity, safeguard records, and help relatives manage complex claims."
Ohio wrongful death statute
Under Ohio Rev. Code § 2125.01, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Ohio applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of services and companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
