Duane Alan Zaugg Killed in Warrens Car Accident

Suspected impaired driver rear-ended pickup truck on Interstate 94, causing both vehicles to roll
Duane Alan Zaugg, 68, of Beloit, was killed in a suspected drunk-driving crash on Interstate 94 near Warrens on Monday night, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The crash remains under investigation by troopers, with enforcement action pending against the other driver. Investigators suspect alcohol played a role in the collision.
A 2018 Kia Optima traveling westbound rear-ended Zaugg's 2017 GMC Sierra near milepost 129 at approximately 10:45 p.m. The impact forced both vehicles off the highway. They rolled several times. Zaugg died at the scene. The Kia's driver, a 21-year-old Warrens woman, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency crews shut down the westbound lanes of I-94 for nearly five hours during the response and cleanup. All lanes have since reopened.
Why did the Kia rear-end the pickup on I-94?
Investigators are examining the role of impairment in the fatal collision. When a driver is suspected of operating under the influence, crash reconstructionists analyze skid marks, vehicle event data recorders, and toxicology reports to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the impact. While the State Patrol continues its work, independent investigations often run parallel to uncover all cause.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "When a suspected drunk driver causes a fatal crash, investigators look beyond skid marks and vehicle damage. Cellphone records, bar tabs, and receipts often help show what happened before impact."
An attorney familiar with impaired-driving cases understands precisely which records to demand and how quickly those records can vanish, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
How do impaired driving patterns affect Wisconsin highways?
Alcohol-related crashes remain a persistent threat on state roads. In a recent year, Wisconsin recorded over 6,000 alcohol-related crashes. In rear-end accidents such as this, safety data points to delayed reaction times and reduced spatial awareness as critical factors. The combination of high interstate speeds and driver impairment frequently results in severe rollover events when vehicles leave the travel lanes.
"Fatal collisions often leave surviving relatives facing emotional and financial hardship. An attorney may monitor investigative developments and help affected families pursue wrongful-death claims while protecting important legal rights," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
Wisconsin wrongful death statute
Under Wis. Stat. § 895.04, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Wisconsin applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of society and companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
