Evelyn Plakal, 22, of Elgin, South Carolina, was killed in a single-vehicle car accident on Riverwatch Parkway near Goodrich Street in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, on Saturday, April 18, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
The westbound vehicle was navigating a curve at a high rate of speed when it veered off the north shoulder. It careened down an embankment, struck a guardrail, and overturned near the old Confederate Power Works chimney.
Both passengers died. The 23-year-old driver, who was ejected from the vehicle, and the passenger found inside were pronounced dead at the scene at 5:56 p.m. on Monday, April 20, when the wreckage was discovered.
Investigators determined the crash happened two days before authorities located the vehicle. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the state recorded 1,615 traffic death in 2023, with speeding frequently cited as a primary factor in roadway departures.
The sheriff's office and the Richmond County Coroner's Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
