Four Killed in Union Aviation Accident

Four people were killed in a small aviation accident near the Union County Airport in Union, South Carolina, on Friday, April 17, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Mooney M20J 201 aircraft reportedly experienced engine failure and crashed into trees short of Runway 5 while attempting to divert. Witnesses reported heavy black smoke in the area as emergency crews and forestry personnel responded to and secured the scene.
All four people on board the aircraft were confirmed dead.
The flight originated in Sanford, North Carolina, and was heading to Ellijay, Georgia. Authorities said the aircraft had stopped in Union to refuel prior to the crash.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the crash.
