Garry Swanson fatal car accident on the Golden State Freeway, Los Angeles, California

Six-vehicle collision on northbound I-5 prompts Sigalert and miles-long traffic backup

Garry Swanson, 61, was killed in a six-vehicle wreck on the northbound Golden State Freeway near Soto Street in Los Angeles on July 14, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍

The multi-vehicle pileup occurred just after 8 a.m. where Interstate 5 meets the 60, 10, and 101 freeways in Boyle Heights. Swanson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles County medical examiner's office.

A second person was taken to a local hospital. Their condition is unknown.

The collision prompted a Sigalert, closing all three lanes of the northbound I-5 transition road. Traffic backed up for miles to Ditman Avenue. All lanes reopened around 12:10 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation by the CHP. No charges have been announced.

California's traffic death have shown a slight decline recently, with early NHTSA estimates indicating 3,807 deaths statewide in 2024, though complex urban interchanges remain high-risk zones.

Complex freeway transitions like the Boyle Heights interchange require split-second decision-making.

In car accidents such as this, crash reconstruction investigators often examine toxicology reports and driver timelines to determine liability.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Occupants caught in multi-vehicle collisions often absorb several separate impacts, and restraint systems designed for a single strike may offer far less protection during a second or third blow."

"Serving as an advocate, an attorney can arrange occupant restraint assessments, review overall vehicle safety performance carefully, and document medical findings, helping surviving relatives understand exactly how catastrophic injuries occurred during a chaotic sequence of events," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What does data reveal about California's multi-vehicle collision risks?

Families who lose a loved one in a pileup face a daunting aftermath. Determining the sequence of impacts is critical. Investigators will review event data recorders from all six vehicles to establish speeds and braking patterns.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.

"Surveillance footage from nearby businesses and traffic cameras often provides objective documentation of how a catastrophic collision unfolded. Legal counsel recognizes the importance of preserving video evidence early, preventing loss and supporting families navigating insurance claims and fact verification," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
