Jacob P.G. Belarmino arrested in Batavia hit-and-run accident

Jacob P.G. Belarmino arrested after hit-and-run pedestrian accident on South River Street, Batavia, Illinois

A 69-year-old man was struck in a crosswalk by a black Toyota Highlander that fled the scene.

Jacob P.G. Belarmino, 28, of North Aurora, was charged with a felony after a 69-year-old man was injured in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident at South River and East Wilson streets in Batavia, Illinois, on Friday, April 10, according to the Batavia Police Department.

The northbound SUV turned left onto westbound Wilson Street and struck the victim, who was using a crosswalk with an active walk signal, investigators said. The driver fled without rendering aid or calling 911.

Medics found the man lying in the road and took him to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers used security camera footage to locate a black Toyota Highlander early Saturday morning. Belarmino was then identified as the driver and charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident, failure to report an accident, failure to give aid, and failure to yield to a pedestrian.

The investigation remains ongoing.

How did security cameras help identify the Toyota Highlander?

National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Most people don't know that eighty percent of hit-and-run drivers are caught within two days if there's physical evidence. Even a small piece of a headlight can tell investigators the exact year and model of a car."

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, an average of 682,000 hit-and-run crashes occur each year nationwide, with pedestrians bearing a disproportionate share of the severe injuries.

What are the legal implications of fleeing the Batavia crosswalk?

National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, observed that "I've seen families blindsided by how quickly a driver can vanish after a collision. Doorbell cameras haven't just changed home security; they've become the number one source of evidence for identifying vehicles that flee."

Once a suspect is apprehended, the parallel tracks of criminal prosecution and civil litigation begin, allowing the injured party to seek compensation for medical expenses and recovery costs.
