Jenny Chacho Sanchez Killed in Brooklyn Pedestrian Accident

The fatal collision involving a commercial box truck occurred in a crosswalk on Gates Avenue in Bushwick
A 29-year-old woman was killed by a commercial truck in Brooklyn. Jenny Maribel Chacho Sanchez died after being struck in a crosswalk on Gates Avenue in Bushwick on Friday, April 17, according to police.
The collision occurred just before 8:30 a.m. when a 49-year-old man driving a 2024 Freightliner box truck hit her.
The critically injured victim was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
When commercial vehicles strike individuals in marked crosswalks, investigators often examine signal timing and driver visibility. Statewide urban pedestrian deaths account for more than 80 percent of traffic death, with nearly half occurring at intersections.
"Most people don't know that simple timing changes at crosswalks can prevent a lifetime of physical pain," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. "A few extra seconds of a head start for walkers dramatically reduces the risk that they'll get hit."
Police have not filed charges against the driver of the Freightliner. Detectives will review surveillance footage from nearby Bushwick businesses and analyze the truck's electronic data to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.
Under N.Y. EPTL § 5-4.1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. New York applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of parental guidance, funeral expenses, and the decedent's conscious pain and suffering.
