Georgia recorded 345 pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes in 2022, a trend that continues to claim lives on local corridors.
John David West, 73, of Perry, was killed in a pedestrian accident on Highway 41 just south of Highway 96 in Houston County on Monday, according to the Houston County Coroner's Office.
The vehicle struck West at approximately 10:45 p.m. along the highway stretch. West died at the scene.
The Houston County Sheriff's Office Traffic Division is investigating the collision. Authorities have not released details about the driver or the specific vehicle involved.
More than half of Georgia's serious and fatal pedestrian collisions occur on two-way principal arterials like Highway 41.

Nighttime visibility and weather-related conditions frequently contribute to pedestrian collisions on major arterial roadways. When rain, fog, or darkness obscures a driver's vision, the risk to pedestrians increases significantly, particularly on roads with posted speeds of 45 mph or higher.

Under O.C.G.A. § 51-4-1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Georgia applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
