Karol Sanchez Injured in Warden Car Accident
The Othello resident was airlifted to the hospital after a head-on collision on State Route 17
Karol Sanchez, 21, of Othello, was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on State Route 17 near Warden, Washington, on Monday, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The collision occurred on a two-lane stretch of the highway. A southbound sedan crossed the center line and struck an oncoming SUV head-on at approximately 6:40 p.m. The 26-year-old driver of the sedan died at the scene. Paramedics airlifted Sanchez, the driver of the SUV, to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland for treatment of serious injuries.
Troopers are investigating whether impairment played a role in the crash. The highway was closed for several hours during the emergency response and initial investigation.
According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, severe injuries in the state rose, with 3,413 people seriously injured on Washington roads in 2023, a 10% increase from the previous year.
While investigators work to determine if intoxicants contributed to the sedan drifting into oncoming traffic, legal practitioners emphasize the importance of independent evidence gathering to protect the injured party's rights.

Washington wrongful death statute
Under RCW § 4.20.010, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Washington applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 3 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
