Lana Crawford, 20, of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, was killed in a train accident at a rail crossing near the station in Palatine, Illinois, on Sunday, according to authorities.
The crossing area was active with commuters when the oncoming train approached the platform. Crawford was struck while preparing to board the commuter rail line, investigators reported.
She died at the scene.
The cosmetology student at Gateway Technical College had recently made the honors list. Her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses.
Metra is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
