Lynn Major Hansen, 62, of Greenville, was killed in a moped crash on Dacusville Highway near Dalton Road in Marietta on Thursday, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Pickens County Deputy Coroner Marsha Alexander responded to the scene at approximately 11:40 p.m. Investigators determined a Dodge 1500 crew cab truck and the moped, driven by Hansen, collided at the intersection, leaving the rider with fatal injuries.
Hansen was pronounced dead at the crash site. A forensic autopsy was scheduled for the following Monday.
The coroner's office and state troopers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
No further details regarding the truck driver or potential charges have been released.
How common are fatal moped crashes in Pickens County?
While the specific cause of the collision on Dacusville Highway remains under investigation, state data shows that moped riders face disproportionate risks.
What factors do investigators examine in truck-moped collisions?
When analyzing moped crashes such as this, crash reconstructionists look closely at right-of-way, visibility, and intersection geometry.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Moped crashes turn devastating fast because riders carry almost no protection compared with passenger vehicles built with steel frames and airbags. Drivers merging without checking blind spots or misjudging closing speed create catastrophic outcomes at busy intersections and along fast moving roadways."
"Legal counsel moves quickly after fatal crashes to gather traffic camera footage, secure vehicle data, and protect surviving families from aggressive insurance tactics," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
For families navigating the sudden loss of a loved one, understanding the exact sequence of events is a critical step. Independent investigations often uncover details not immediately apparent at the scene, such as electronic data from the larger vehicle or surveillance footage from nearby properties.
South Carolina wrongful death statute
Under S.C. Code § 15-51-10, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. South Carolina applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and mental shock and suffering.
"Grieving families deserve patience from every professional involved in a wrongful death matter, not pressure to move faster. Legal counsel checks in without rushing, offering guidance at a pace that respects raw emotion while keeping the claim moving steadily forward," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
