Both a garbage truck and a semi tractor-trailer were traveling south in the S9200 block when the two heavy-duty vehicles collided at approximately 2:57 p.m. Bystanders immediately rushed to help the trapped driver.

Rescuers spent an hour extricating the younger driver from the wreckage. He was flown by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital for treatment of severe injuries.

The 60-year-old West Allis man driving the semi-truck was not hurt and is cooperating with investigators.
