Maria Contreras Albino Killed in Julian Car Accident

Maria Del Carmen Contreras Albino fatal car accident on State Route 78, Julian, California

Three people died after two pickup trucks collided head-on along State Route 78

Maria Del Carmen Contreras Albino, 48, was killed in a head-on crash on State Route 78 near Mastros Trailer Park Road in Julian on April 4, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The collision involved two pickup trucks and prompted a full closure of the highway in both directions. The vehicles collided head-on and overturned multiple times.

Three people died. First responders extricated Albino from the wreckage and attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck Albino was riding in, a 66-year-old man, also died at the crash site. The other driver, a 72-year-old San Diego man, was transported to Palomar Medical Center, where he died on April 6.

The cause remains unconfirmed. Authorities are investigating what led to the crash.

How common are fatal crashes on rural California corridors?

State Route 78 winds through the mountainous terrain of San Diego County, presenting challenges for drivers. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, rural road crashes often result in severe outcomes due to higher speeds and limited physical barriers between opposing lanes of traffic. When head-on collisions occur in these environments, the combined velocity of the vehicles drastically reduces survivability.

What do investigators look for in a head-on collision?

As officials work to determine which driver crossed the center line, crash reconstructionists will examine tire marks, vehicle resting positions, and potential environmental factors. "The loss of a loved one on a curved road is a heartache that doesn't ever truly fade," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. "Investigators often look at the road's superelevation to see if the pavement's angle actually pulled the tires outward."

What happens next for the families involved?

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and local law enforcement will compile a final collision report detailing the sequence of events. For the family of a passenger like Albino, who had no control over the vehicles involved, this official documentation is a critical piece of understanding how the tragedy unfolded and establishing liability between the two drivers.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
