Mark Ryan bicycle accident on Hudson Drive, St. Louis County, Missouri

The crash occurred on Hudson Drive near Canfield Drive

Mark Ryan, 66, was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Hudson Drive near Canfield Drive on Thursday, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍

The bicyclist was struck by a 2014 black Chevrolet Sonic, throwing him into the air. The driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle with extensive damage to the front driver's side panel and windshield. Ryan was riding his bicycle to work when the collision occurred. He later died.

Investigators located the suspect vehicle but have not announced any arrests. Witnesses reported seeing a woman and a teenage boy inside the car at the time of the collision.

Neighbors noted that speeding is a frequent issue along the curve where the crash happened. The Bureau of Crimes Against Persons and the Accident Reconstruction unit are leading the ongoing investigation.

When drivers handle residential curves at excessive speeds, the risk of fatal outcomes for vulnerable road users increases exponentially. Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Driver distraction is among the leading contributing factors in serious bicycle crash cases. An attorney can investigate phone records, in-vehicle technology logs, and eyewitness observations to determine whether a driver was engaged with a device at the critical moment of impact."

Residents along Hudson Drive report a history of vehicles losing control and striking property due to excessive speed. In 2024, the St. Louis region recorded 36 pedestrian and cyclist death in the county alone, highlighting the severe risks present on local roadways.

"Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined. These procedures are necessary for helping those who have lost a loved one receive the justice that they deserve," noted Stefano Formica, who serves as a national legal analyst for Accident News and is of Bond Legal

Hit-and-run incidents often involve drivers attempting to evade responsibility for reckless behavior, such as speeding or distracted driving. Nationwide, more than 900,000 hit-and-run crashes occurred in 2023, accounting for roughly 15 percent of all traffic collisions.
