Michael David Bertalan car accident on Dublin Boulevard, Dublin, California

The Memorial Day chain-reaction collision left two other motorists hospitalized in critical condition

Michael David Bertalan, 45, of San Ramon, was killed in a five-vehicle accident on Dublin Boulevard near Regional Street in Dublin, California, on May 25, according to police.‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌

A westbound red Lexus ES 350 traveling at high speeds struck the back of a gray Volkswagen Jetta in the right-hand turn lane. The impact triggered a chain-reaction collision involving three additional vehicles, leaving all five disabled.

The Alameda County Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to extricate multiple people from the wreckage. Bertalan, who was driving the Jetta, died from his injuries.

Two other drivers were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

The sudden loss of a loved one in a violent chain-reaction crash leaves families grappling with deep grief and complex legal questions. While the community mourns the loss of Bertalan, investigators are working to piece together the exact sequence of events on Dublin Boulevard.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, said, "Witness accounts gathered promptly after fatal high‑speed crashes often capture critical observations about driving behavior, lane changes, and vehicle speed in the moments preceding impact. These details may not be fully reconstructed through physical evidence and electronic data alone."

When attorneys act quickly, they can interview witnesses, preserve statements, and compare accounts with surveillance footage. This builds a strong record that supports families in civil cases after high‑speed crashes, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

Why did the Lexus fail to stop on Dublin Boulevard?

Crash reconstruction experts will examine the event data recorder of the speeding vehicle to determine its exact velocity and braking status prior to the impact. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding is a primary factor in nearly one-third of all fatal traffic collisions nationwide.

"Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide families during this difficult time, while protecting their legal rights and best interests," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

What are the legal options for families affected by the Dublin chain-reaction crash?

Families navigating the aftermath of a multi-vehicle collision often face immediate financial burdens alongside their emotional trauma. Independent investigations frequently uncover critical liability factors, such as distracted driving or mechanical failures, that may not be immediately apparent at the crash scene.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
