Police are searching for a dark-colored SUV with front-end damage after a jogger was struck early Saturday

Michele Walters, 60, of Sayville, was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash on Brook Street near Cherry Avenue in Sayville, New York, early Saturday, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍

The suspect vehicle, described by investigators as a dark-colored SUV, struck the jogger and fled the scene. Detectives noted the SUV likely sustained damage to its front end or front passenger side.

Paramedics found Walters lying on the side of the road after receiving a 911 call at 5:44 a.m. She was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious injuries.

The Major Case Unit is actively investigating the collision. Authorities are asking anyone who spotted the vehicle of interest to contact detectives.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than 240,000 injuries occurred in hit-and-run crashes nationwide in 2023, accounting for 10% of all crash injuries.

What evidence helps solve the Sayville hit-and-run?

When a driver flees the scene of a pedestrian collision, investigators rely heavily on physical evidence left behind, such as vehicle debris, and nearby surveillance footage to identify the suspect. Victims recovering from severe injuries in hit-and-run accidents face immense physical and emotional hurdles while police search for the responsible driver.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "When a motorist flees after a serious collision, the delay in aid can turn survivable injuries into tragedies. Investigators must work harder to understand what happened, often relying on community cooperation and careful reconstruction."

An attorney can provide stability during that process, preserving evidence and coordinating with experts to ensure families are not left without recourse.

How do victims recover compensation after a hit-and-run?

Even if the dark-colored SUV driver remains unidentified, injured pedestrians may still have avenues for financial recovery through their own insurance policies or state funds. Insurance adjusters often contact injured parties within days of a crash, before the full extent of medical costs and long-term impacts is known.

"Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may accrue. That's where an attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

New York personal injury framework

New York follows a pure comparative fault system with no-fault auto insurance. The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Under New York's no-fault system, PIP benefits cover medical expenses and lost wages up to $50,000 regardless of fault. To pursue a liability claim, injuries must meet the 'serious injury' threshold under Insurance Law § 5102(d).
