Two-vehicle collision at West Rebound Road intersection leaves two dead, three hospitalized

Miguel Angel Trujillo Valdivia, 41, of Charlotte, was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Rock Hill Highway at West Rebound Road in Lancaster County on May 27, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌

Paramedics rushed four injured people to regional hospitals after the 7:40 p.m. collision. A Ford pickup and an Audi collided at the intersection, causing the truck to overturn and forcing the car off the road into a guardrail.

Trujillo Valdivia, who was riding in the right-front passenger seat of the Ford, died at the scene. Another passenger in the truck was also killed.

The drivers of both vehicles and a third passenger survived and were taken to Atrium Health and Piedmont Health. Troopers have not determined what caused the crash, which occurred during the 6-9 p.m. window when state data shows fatal collisions are most frequent.

The investigation is ongoing.

What do investigators look for in intersection collisions?

As the Highway Patrol continues to investigate the Lancaster County crash, independent reviews often run parallel to official inquiries to preserve evidence and determine liability.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Mechanical inspections of vehicles involved in fatal crashes can reveal brake failures, tire defects, steering malfunctions, or maintenance neglect that contributed to a collision in ways that initial scene photographs alone would never capture. That inspection work is most valuable when conducted before vehicles are repaired, transferred, or destroyed."

An attorney can help surviving families move quickly to request vehicle preservation, retain qualified mechanical inspectors, and ensure that any evidence of pre-existing defects or maintenance failures is independently documented, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do South Carolina crash statistics compare nationally?

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates South Carolina's death rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled is significantly higher than the national average. The state recorded a rate of 2.08 in 2021, roughly 42% above the U.S. baseline, underscoring the raise risks on local roadways.

"While mourning a devastating loss, families are often required to address complicated legal and financial issues, making experienced legal counsel an important source of support and guidance," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

Individuals involved in fatal car accidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.

South Carolina wrongful death statute

Under S.C. Code § 15-51-10, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. South Carolina applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and mental shock and suffering.
