Myles Sellars Injured in Logan County Motorcycle Accident

The 16-year-old motorcyclist was injured when an oncoming SUV attempted to pass a tractor on County Road 1
Myles Sellars, 16, of Bellefontaine, was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on County Road 1 in Logan County, Ohio, on Thursday, according to the Logan County Sheriff's Office.
A northbound 2015 Subaru Forester attempted to pass a tractor that was partially in the opposing lane. A southbound 2003 Honda motorcycle struck the SUV's driver's side, throwing the rider from the bike.
Sellars, who was wearing a helmet, was transported by Macochee EMS to Union County Memorial Hospital with suspected serious injuries.
The 17-year-old driver of the SUV was not injured and was cited for improper overtaking and passing.
The crash remains under investigation.
Why did the SUV cross the center line on County Road 1?
Investigators are reviewing the sequence of events that led the SUV to enter the opposing lane while attempting to pass a tractor. In motorcycle accidents such as this, crash reconstructionists examine sightlines, vehicle speeds, and passing clearances to determine exactly how the collision occurred.
"Nobody thinks about the physics of a crash until it's much too late to slow down. Research indicates that the speed differential between two vehicles is actually the strongest predictor of whether someone survives the impact," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, collisions account for many serious motorcycle injuries nationwide, particularly on two-lane rural roads where passing is attempted.
What are the risks for motorcyclists facing oncoming traffic?
Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable when oncoming vehicles improperly overtake slower traffic, as they have less physical protection and a narrower profile that can be difficult for passing drivers to judge.
"Healing after a wreck is a long road, and the uncertainty about what caused it doesn't help. Road geometry like sight distance and drainage grooves can pull tires, making a standard curve much more dangerous than it looks," said Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal.
The sheriff's office continues to document the crash scene to finalize its report on the collision.
