Natalie Michelle Gutierrez car accident on Campbell Avenue, Tucson, Arizona

Driver faces charges after fatal two-vehicle collision on Campbell Avenue

Natalie Michelle Gutierrez, 24, of Tucson, died March 12 after a two-vehicle crash at Campbell Avenue and Drexel Road, Tucson police said. The crash happened at about 12:45 p.m., police said. A 1996 Ford Bronco traveling southbound on Campbell Avenue ran a red light and hit a 2013 Hyundai Elantra traveling eastbound on Drexel Road. The impact caused the Ford Bronco to roll over, police said. Gutierrez, a passenger in the Bronco, was ejected from the vehicle. Responders pronounced Gutierrez dead at the scene, police said. Investigators noted she was not wearing a seatbelt. The 22-year-old driver of the Bronco faces criminal charges, police said. No other injuries were reported. The Tucson Police Department is investigating the crash.

The Tucson Police Department Operations Division South and the DUI Unit conducted the initial response and investigation. While the 22-year-old driver of the Ford Bronco was not found to be impaired, he was charged with the criminal offense of causing death due to failing to stop at a red traffic light. The intersection of Campbell Avenue and Drexel Road was subject to temporary closures during the on-scene evidence collection. Roadway evidence confirms that the Bronco was traveling at the posted speed limit when the violation occurred. The investigation remains active as authorities finalize the reconstruction of the crash mechanics.

National Legal Analyst Cristina Perez, Attorney at Perez Law Group, noted that "I've seen families blindsided by how quickly a simple left turn at an intersection can turn fatal. There's a reason these maneuvers account for over twenty percent of all deadly crashes tracked by recent data."

In Arizona, families of those killed in motor vehicle accidents may pursue a wrongful death claim to recover damages for funeral expenses, lost financial support, and the loss of companionship. When a driver is charged with a criminal offense such as failing to stop for a red light, it can be a significant factor in a parallel civil proceeding. Understanding the legal pathways available to survivors can be aided by a consultation. Individuals who have been involved in serious collisions should be aware that insurance companies often attempt to minimize payouts, making independent legal representation a critical component of protecting one’s rights.
