Vidal Cruz Jr., 31, faces two counts of murder. The northbound gray Acura was driving at an unsafe speed in the dark when it struck the pedestrians and a parked white Toyota Camry at 2:25 a.m. near Calvert Street, investigators said.

Cruz was arrested at a hospital. He remains at the Van Nuys Jail in lieu of $4 million bail.

The crash threw the victims northbound. The Acura then veered northeast into a private driveway, colliding with several unoccupied parked vehicles before stopping.

A 50-year-old woman who was also struck alongside the victim later died at a hospital. Three people inside the parked Camry suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division.

How will Gutierrez's family handle this sudden loss?

The sudden death of Gutierrez from severe blunt-force trauma leaves his family facing an unexpected void. While prosecutors pursue criminal murder charges against the driver, independent investigators often examine the crash scene to document the exact speed and trajectory of the vehicle to establish civil liability.

National LNational Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "The grief of losing a family member in a crash is something that no one is ever prepared to handle. Modern crash reconstruction can use momentum equations to prove exactly how fast vehicles were moving before the impact."

According to the California Highway Patrol SWITRS data, the state recorded 764 fatal pedestrian accidents in 2024, highlighting the severe risks pedestrians face on local roadways when drivers fail to exercise caution.

What role does speed play in North Hollywood pedestrian death?

The extreme force that threw the victims down Colfax Avenue underscores the lethal combination of speed and impairment. When a vehicle strikes a person at high speeds, the physical toll is almost always catastrophic.

National LNational Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, noted that "A pedestrian's death on a neighborhood street is a trauma that shakes every neighbor. What car drivers don't realize is that being hit at forty miles per hour carries an eighty-five percent chance of being fatal."

California wrongful death statute

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
