Nicholas Addis killed, driver injured in North Broward wrong-way crash

A wrong-way collision on the West Sample Road overpass left one driver dead and another with life-threatening injuries
Nicholas Addis was killed and a 47-year-old Pompano Beach man was critically injured in a wrong-way crash on West Sample Road in North Broward on Saturday, April 11, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
The collision occurred on the Florida Turnpike overpass at approximately 3:29 a.m. A 2006 Nissan Pathfinder traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes struck Addis' oncoming 2025 Hyundai Tucson head-on in the center lane.
Paramedics rushed the wrong-way driver to a local hospital for treatment of possible life-threatening injuries. Addis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
The sudden loss of life and severe injuries in wrong-way crashes leave families and communities searching for answers. In car accidents such as this, investigators rely on electronic evidence to understand the sequence of events leading up to the crash. Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "When I hear about high-speed collisions, I think about the heavy grief those families carry. A car's black box captures the five seconds before impact, showing if there wasn't even a tap on the brakes."
As the community mourns the fatal outcome on the West Sample Road overpass, detectives will reconstruct the scene to determine how the vehicle entered the opposing lanes. Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, observed that "What most people miss about car data is the depth of the black box. It captures five seconds of steering and braking data so it's clear if safety systems didn't work."
Understanding the full scope of liability requires a thorough examination of toxicology reports, road signage, and vehicle diagnostics. Investigators will review the overpass infrastructure to see if environmental factors played a role in the wrong-way travel.
Under Fla. Stat. § 768.16-768.26, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Florida applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of support and services, loss of companionship, mental pain and suffering of survivors, and medical/funeral expenses.
