Angel Corado, 35, was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian crash at Winnetka Avenue and Sherman Way on Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The first vehicle, a southbound black Chevrolet Camaro, struck Corado as he crossed outside a marked crosswalk at approximately 10 p.m. A white Ford truck then struck him while he was lying in the roadway.
Paramedics rushed Corado to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Both drivers fled the scene without stopping.
Detectives recovered vehicle parts left behind by the fleeing drivers. The LAPD Valley Traffic Division is asking anyone with information to contact investigators.
What is the status of the hit-and-run investigation?
The sudden loss of a family member in a hit-and-run collision leaves grieving relatives searching for accountability. While the LAPD analyzes the recovered vehicle parts to identify the black Chevrolet Camaro and white Ford truck, independent investigations often run parallel to law enforcement efforts to locate fleeing drivers.
In pedestrian collisions, traffic safety analysts point to vehicle speed and nighttime visibility as critical factors. National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Losing a loved one to a vehicle while they're simply walking is a nightmare no one should endure. Speed matters because a person hit at forty miles per hour only has a fifteen percent chance of survival."
How common are fatal pedestrian accidents in Los Angeles?
The corner of Winnetka Avenue and Sherman Way sits within a region grappling with pedestrian safety concerns. When drivers flee the scene, it worsens the situation for families seeking answers.
California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is two years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
National Legal Analyst Bond noted that "Every state has a deadline for taking action after a tragedy, known as the statute of limitations."
