A passenger was critically injured in a single-vehicle car accident on Kaumualii Highway near Kalepa Street in Lihue, Hawaii, early Saturday, according to the Kauai Police Department.
The eastbound 2003 Jeep Wrangler struck a cement curb, collided with two traffic signal poles and overturned at approximately 3:10 a.m. Both people inside were ejected from the tumbling vehicle.
Paramedics transported the passenger to Wilcox Medical Center before transferring them to The Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. The 24-year-old driver died from his injuries.
Investigators believe speed contributed to the wreck. Toxicology results are pending to determine if impairment was a factor, police said.
Emergency crews closed the intersection for more than two hours.
This marks the fourth traffic death on the island in 2026.
