A passenger was killed and two others were critically injured when their vehicle collided with a light rail train at the corner of Folsom Boulevard and Mills Park Drive in Rancho Cordova on Thursday, according to police.
The car bypassed activated crossing arms and drove directly into the path of the oncoming Sacramento Regional Transit train, investigators said.
Paramedics transported all three passengers of the car to a local hospital with critical injuries. Emergency crews extricated at least one passenger whose foot became trapped in the wreckage, and authorities confirmed one of the vehicle's occupants later died.
No passengers on the train were hurt.
The Rancho Cordova Police Department is leading the investigation. Detectives have ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors in the collision.
A bus bridge was temporarily established on the Gold Line between the Mather Field/Mills and Sunrise stations while crews cleared the scene.
