The car bypassed activated crossing arms and drove directly into the path of the oncoming Sacramento Regional Transit train, investigators said.

Paramedics transported all three passengers of the car to a local hospital with critical injuries. Emergency crews extricated at least one passenger whose foot became trapped in the wreckage, and authorities confirmed one of the vehicle's occupants later died.

No passengers on the train were hurt.

The Rancho Cordova Police Department is leading the investigation. Detectives have ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors in the collision.

A bus bridge was temporarily established on the Gold Line between the Mather Field/Mills and Sunrise stations while crews cleared the scene.

Why did the vehicle bypass the crossing arms on Folsom Boulevard?

While Rancho Cordova police continue to investigate the sequence of events that led the car onto the tracks, independent reviews are often necessary in railroad crossing collisions. National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Train accident investigations require a thorough examination of crossing signal functionality, sightlines, and the train's event data recorder to understand the complete picture."

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, there were over 2,100 highway-rail grade crossing collisions nationwide in 2022, resulting in nearly 300 deaths.

What are the legal options for the injured passengers?

The surviving passengers and the family of the deceased face a difficult recovery process, often dealing with complex liability questions when a driver's actions lead to a catastrophic impact. National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, noted that "In motor vehicle accidents involving trains, injured passengers or their families can pursue claims against the at-fault driver's insurance to help cover mounting medical bills and funeral expenses."

Establishing negligence is a critical step for passengers seeking compensation after a severe collision.

Under California's wrongful death and personal injury statutes, surviving family members and injured passengers may pursue civil claims against an at-fault driver whose negligence caused a collision. The state follows a pure comparative negligence system, allowing victims to recover damages even if multiple parties share fault for the crash. Formica noted that "Wrongful death claims provide a vital legal mechanism for families to seek financial stability after a sudden loss, while personal injury claims protect surviving passengers from bearing the cost of someone else's mistake."

Victims generally have up to two years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit in California. Successful claims can yield compensation for economic damages, such as medical expenses and lost earning capacity, as well as non-economic damages like pain and suffering or loss of consortium.
