Paul Byrd Jr. arrested in Dauphin Island golf cart accident, Alabama

Several victims, including children, were injured in the rear-end collision

Dauphin Island Police arrested 44-year-old Paul Byrd Jr. after a golf cart and vehicle accident that injured multiple people on Bienville Boulevard Saturday. Byrd was charged with two counts of assault and a DUI, according to a statement released by the department. A heavily damaged six-seat golf cart had been rear-ended by a pickup truck. Several victims, ranging in age from one to around 40 years old, were involved in the collision. Two victims suffered serious injuries and were transported to local trauma centers. Two children suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital as a precaution. As of Sunday morning, the department said all victims were in stable condition. Officers responded to the 2600 block of Bienville Boulevard just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The incident remains under investigation by Dauphin Island Police.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "DUI accident cases often involve complex legal and factual issues, requiring a thorough investigation to establish liability and pursue full compensation for victims." Victims can seek punitive damages, which are awarded to punish the at-fault driver for egregious conduct and deter similar reckless behavior in the future. The statute of limitations for personal injury claims in Alabama is generally two years from the date of the accident, making timely legal action critical for preserving a victim's rights.

Under Alabama law, victims injured in a DUI accident may pursue civil claims against the at-fault driver. These claims can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain, and suffering. Alabama operates under a contributory negligence rule, which means if an injured party is found even 1% at fault, they may be barred from recovering damages.
