Paul Byrd Jr. Arrested in Dauphin Island Golf Cart Accident

Several victims, including children, were injured in the rear-end collision
Paul Byrd Jr., 44, was arrested Saturday after a golf cart and vehicle crash injured multiple people on Bienville Boulevard, Dauphin Island police said. Byrd faces two counts of assault and a DUI charge, according to police.
A pickup truck rear-ended a six-seat golf cart, causing heavy damage to the cart. Several people, ranging in age from one to about 40 years old, were involved in the crash.
Two victims suffered serious injuries and were taken to trauma centers. Two children suffered minor injuries and were transported to a hospital as a precaution. All victims were in stable condition Sunday morning, police said.
Officers responded to the 2600 block of Bienville Boulevard just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The crash remains under investigation by Dauphin Island Police.
Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "DUI accident cases often involve complex legal and factual issues, requiring a thorough investigation to establish liability and pursue full compensation for victims." Victims can seek punitive damages, which are awarded to punish the at-fault driver for egregious conduct and deter similar reckless behavior in the future. The statute of limitations for personal injury claims in Alabama is generally two years from the date of the accident, making timely legal action critical for preserving a victim's rights.
Under Alabama law, victims injured in a DUI accident may pursue civil claims against the at-fault driver. These claims can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain, and suffering. Alabama operates under a contributory negligence rule, which means if an injured party is found even 1% at fault, they may be barred from recovering damages.
