Payton Toombs Injured in Cleveland Car Accident

Payton Toombs car accident on West 150th Street, Cleveland, Ohio

Suspect charged with aggravated vehicular assault after allegedly stealing SUV left running in driveway

Payton Toombs, 22, of Tennessee, was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle accident at West 150th Street and Lorain Avenue in Cleveland on April 24, according to police.

Police charged Zayd Alameen, 22, of Las Vegas, with aggravated vehicular assault and aggravated vehicular homicide. Authorities stated he allegedly stole a running GMC SUV from a driveway and caused the crash minutes later.

Emergency crews extricated at least one person from the wreckage. A 54-year-old man involved in the collision was killed.

Toombs suffered a broken femur and severe pelvic injuries, requiring multiple surgeries at MetroHealth Medical Center. She was visiting the area for a tournament with her fiancé, who was also in the vehicle but has since been released from the hospital.

Alameen is being held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court.

How do criminal charges impact the Cleveland crash investigation?

The arrest of a suspect on felony charges adds a layer of complexity to the recovery process for victims like Toombs. While law enforcement focuses on the criminal prosecution of the driver who allegedly stole the SUV, civil investigators must simultaneously examine all avenues of liability, including the owner of the stolen vehicle left running unattended. In complex multi-vehicle accidents, insurance coverage can become a critical factor for injured passengers.

"The family of the passenger may also open a claim with the insurance company of the vehicle they were occupied in if their driver is held liable," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. "The option has no impact on one's own insurance policy since the claim is being made against an insurance policy that is not their own."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding and reckless driving are primary factors in injury-causing crashes, contributing to the thousands of collisions reported annually across Ohio.

What are the next steps for the injured victims?

As Toombs undergoes extensive surgeries at MetroHealth, her family faces mounting medical bills and a disrupted future. In stolen vehicle crashes, insurance adjusters often move quickly to minimize payouts before the full extent of long-term medical care is understood.

"Personal injury attorneys can help protect a victim's rights and prevent statements made to police and insurance companies from being used against them," said Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal
