Ralph Fulmore Jr. killed in Marion County car accident, SCHP reports

Ralph Fulmore Jr. fatal car accident on Highway 501, Marion County, South Carolina

The 36-year-old Florence County paramedic was returning home from an exam when a southbound SUV crossed the center line and struck his pickup truck

Ralph Fulmore Jr., 36, of Lake City, was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 501 near Snipes Road in Marion County at about 5:30 p.m. on April 8, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A southbound 2015 Lincoln Navigator crossed the center line and struck his northbound 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck. Fulmore, a Florence County paramedic, was returning home from taking the National Registry Paramedic exam when the collision occurred.

Why did the Lincoln Navigator cross the center line on Highway 501?

Investigators will examine the road, vehicle mechanics, and driver behavior to determine why the SUV drifted into oncoming traffic. Head-on collisions often prompt reconstruction teams to look for signs of distracted driving, fatigue, or impairment. Families who lose a loved one in a sudden crossover crash are often left searching for answers while facing immediate financial and emotional burdens.

National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "The grief of losing a family member in a crash is something that no one is ever prepared to handle. Modern crash reconstruction can use momentum equations to prove exactly how fast vehicles were moving before the impact. According to the National Safety Council, crossing the centerline and causing a deadly crash is one of the most common causes of fatal accidents."

National Legal Analyst Stefano G. Formica added, "When a driver crosses a centerline, it is often due to a medical emergency, falling asleep at the wheel, or distracted driving. These collisions are often unavoidable for the innocent driver."

How common are fatal head-on collisions in South Carolina?

Statewide data indicates that multiple-vehicle crashes accounted for 54% of South Carolina's 1,047 traffic deaths in 2023. When a vehicle crosses a center line on a rural highway like Highway 501, the combined speed of both vehicles drastically reduces the survivability of the impact.

South Carolina wrongful death statute

Under S.C. Code § 15-51-10, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. South Carolina applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and mental shock and suffering.
