Reginald Crim Killed in La Puente Car Accident

Reginald Crim car accident on Maplegrove Street, La Puente, California

The two-vehicle collision occurred late Friday night on Maplegrove Street near Alieron Avenue

California recorded more than 7,100 traffic deaths in 2024, according to state crash data, underscoring the persistent toll on local roads where speeding, impairment, and distraction remain leading causes.

Reginald Crim, 49, was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Maplegrove Street near Alieron Avenue in La Puente late Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌

The 11:34 p.m. crash involved a black Jeep and a gray sedan, blocking both eastbound and westbound lanes of the road as emergency crews responded.

Responding officers found the victim unconscious inside one of the vehicles. Crim was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office later confirmed his identity.

Authorities have not released information regarding the condition of the other driver or the exact sequence of events that led to the impact.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 39,254 traffic deaths nationwide in 2024, with speeding, alcohol impairment, and distraction leading the causes, while nighttime visibility and adverse weather also contributed.

How do weather conditions impact crash frequency in Los Angeles County?

When rain and slick roads factor into nighttime collisions, the risk of fatal outcomes increases significantly. After a fatal crash, reconstruction specialists get into the details most people never think about. How worn the tires were, how long braking actually took, what a driver could or couldn't have seen in those final seconds.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Fatal crashes that happen after dark deserve more scrutiny than they typically receive. Poor visibility, slowed reaction time, and undetected road hazards all converge in ways that make certain collisions entirely preventable."

Bond added, "An attorney can obtain government maintenance records and internal correspondence to determine whether the dangerous condition had already been reported before a life was lost."

What happens next in the CHP investigation?

Investigators will review physical evidence from the Jeep and the sedan to determine which vehicle lost control or crossed into opposing traffic. Families who lose loved ones in these crashes often face immediate questions about liability and insurance coverage while waiting for official police reports to be finalized.

"Insurance companies move quickly after fatal crashes, and not always in a direction that serves grieving families. Adjusters begin assessing claims, gathering statements, and building internal case files while a family is still making funeral arrangements," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

An attorney who steps in early ensures surviving relatives are not navigating those conversations alone and that nothing said in those early days is used to complicate or undermine a legitimate claim, added Formica.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
