Julia Blackwell, 21, was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Orange County Jail on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Investigators located her at her mother's home after she avoided detectives for several days following the collision.

The crash happened shortly after 5 a.m. Bear had arrived to help pull the suspect's pickup truck from the mud with a tow strap. After successfully freeing the vehicle, he stepped out to remove the strap.

The truck accelerated. Investigators said the vehicle struck Bear, then reversed and ran over him.

The driver and a male passenger then fled the scene in the truck before getting stuck in the mud again farther down the road. Witnesses reported hearing the passenger yell that the driver had killed the man. The pair then called for a ride and abandoned the silver pickup, which was later found with shattered windows.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Why did the driver flee the scene near State Road 50?

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Motorists sometimes escape after violent impacts due to panic, impairment, or fear of legal accountability. This decision worsens catastrophic injuries by delaying medical aid and creates fragmented evidence trails that complicate identification. Attorneys provide critical support by preserving skid marks, reviewing forensic findings, and coordinating reconstruction experts."

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAAFTS), hit-and-run death have been increasing nationwide, leaving many families searching for accountability. Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest rates of pedestrian death and hit-and-run incidents.

What happens next for the victim's family?

"Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights. An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time, and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

Individuals involved in hit-and-run pedestrian incidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.

Recoverable damages may include loss of support and services, loss of companionship, mental pain and suffering of survivors, and medical/funeral expenses.
