Sergio Morales pedestrian accident on Jewella Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana

The collision occurred when a southbound SUV drove around a stopped vehicle near Midway Street.

Sergio Morales, 38, of Shreveport, was killed in a pedestrian accident on Jewella Avenue near Midway Street on Saturday, April 4, according to the Shreveport Police Department.

A southbound Chevrolet Equinox drove around a vehicle that had stopped in the left lane, at which point the driver spotted Morales crossing the street and attempted to swerve but could not avoid a collision.

Paramedics with the Shreveport Fire Department treated Morales at the scene for life-threatening injuries before transporting him to an area hospital.

He was pronounced dead at 1:54 a.m. Sunday. The police department's Crash Investigation Unit is reviewing the sequence of events.

Police urged drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant as the investigation continues.

Why did the Chevrolet Equinox drive around a stopped vehicle on Jewella Avenue?

For the family of Morales, understanding the exact sequence of events that led to this tragedy is a critical step. While police continue to investigate why the driver chose to drive around a stopped vehicle rather than yielding, independent crash reconstruction can help uncover details about speed, sightlines, and driver reaction times.

"The human toll of a pedestrian crash is a tragedy that our whole community feels," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. "If a car hits someone at forty miles per hour, there's an eighty-five percent chance the person walking won't survive the impact."

According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, the state recorded 161 pedestrian deaths in 2024, a nearly 10% increase from the previous year. Urban corridors frequently see higher rates of these collisions.

What are the next steps for the Morales family?

As investigators review the scene near Midway Street, the victim's estate may face immediate challenges regarding insurance and liability. When a driver fails to recognize why traffic has stopped ahead of them, it often raises questions about negligence and duty of care.

"I've seen families blindsided by how quickly a quiet walk turned into a nightmare," said Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal"Research indicates that trucks and SUVs are three times more likely to kill a pedestrian than sedans because of their high hood geometry."

Individuals involved in pedestrian accidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.
