Sheila Quarterman Killed in Walnut Ridge Car Accident

Pickup truck crossed center line on U.S. 63, striking van head-on before hitting SUV
Sheila Quarterman, 58, of Pocahontas, was killed in a three-vehicle accident at U.S. 63 and State Highway 91 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, on Tuesday, according to the State Police.
A northbound pickup truck crossed the center line and struck a southbound van head-on before veering back and hitting a northbound SUV. It was raining and the road was wet at the time of the collision, investigators noted.
The driver of the van, Quarterman, died from her injuries. A 64-year-old passenger in the van and a minor were hospitalized.
The driver of the pickup, along with a 63-year-old man, a 60-year-old woman and another minor in the SUV, were also taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Authorities are continuing to investigate why the pickup drifted into oncoming traffic. No charges have been announced.
The sudden loss of Quarterman highlights the severe consequences of head-on collisions on rural highways. While investigators work to determine exactly why the pickup crossed the center line on U.S. 63, legal professionals emphasize the importance of independent accident reconstruction.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Rural highways frequently experience severe head-on collisions because narrow shoulders, limited lighting, higher travel speeds, and fewer physical barriers sometimes reduce opportunities for corrective maneuvers when drivers encounter distraction, fatigue, weather hazards, or sudden lane departures during nighttime transportation travel conditions."
According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), head-on crashes account for more than 10 percent of all rural fatal accidents, often driven by distraction, fatigue, or speed.
Why did the pickup cross the center line on U.S. 63?
Arkansas State Police are examining whether wet road conditions, speed, or driver distraction played a role in the pickup drifting into the southbound lanes. Investigators will review tire marks, vehicle damage, and witness statements to piece together the moments before the impact.
What are the next steps for the injured passengers?
With multiple people hospitalized from the van and the SUV, investigators will compile a full crash report to establish liability.
According to Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal, "When vehicle accidents result from unsafe driving, aggressive or distracted driving, speeding, or driving under the influence, victims are usually left with the option to pursue a civil action."
Victims of car accidents may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney to understand their legal options.
Arkansas wrongful death statute
