Two Injured in Mattoon Semi-Truck Accident

Wooden debris blocked northbound lanes of Interstate 57 for nearly two hours following the collision
Two people were injured in a crash involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 57 near U.S. Route 45 in Mattoon, Illinois, on Wednesday, according to the State Police.
The collision scattered wooden debris across the northbound lanes, forcing authorities to divert traffic off the highway at the interchange for nearly two hours.
Paramedics transported both individuals to a local hospital for treatment.
Troopers have not released the conditions of the patients or details regarding what caused the commercial vehicles to collide.
Crews cleared the wreckage and reopened the interstate at 8:35 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation.
What caused the commercial vehicles to collide on Interstate 57?
Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the collision and subsequent debris spill. In truck accidents such as this, crash reconstructionists examine electronic logging devices, vehicle maintenance records, and driver hours of service to identify cause.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Commercial trucking crashes highlight dangers linked to fatigue, mechanical failure, and regulatory violations. An attorney often works alongside reconstruction specialists reviewing electronic logging devices, maintenance histories, cargo records, surveillance footage, and medical documentation protecting injured occupants from insurance complications."
“According to the National Safety Council, 5,218 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes in 2024, reflecting a 3 percent decrease from 2023 but a 30 percent increase over the past decade.
How do investigators analyze semi-truck crashes?
Commercial trucking companies often dispatch their own response teams to crash sites immediately after an incident occurs to begin building a defense.
According to Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal, "Commercial accidents are often complex, and many factors can play a role in these types of collisions. A skilled attorney can protect victims from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites."
When two commercial vehicles collide, liability can extend beyond the drivers to include the trucking companies, maintenance providers, or cargo loaders. Independent investigations help ensure that all electronic control module (ECM) data and dash-cam footage are preserved before they can be overwritten or destroyed.
