Two Killed in Iowa Park Semi-Truck Accident

The northbound tractor-trailer crossed the barrier on U.S. Highway 287 before the fatal crash.
Two people were killed early Saturday, April 18, when a northbound semi-truck crossed a median barrier on U.S. Highway 287 into the path of a southbound truck just west of Iowa Park, according to Wichita County Sheriff William Rutledge.
The northbound rig may have been blown off the road and through the dividing barrier before entering the opposing lanes. Investigators are working to determine if the vehicles collided directly or if the southbound driver lost control and overturned.
Two individuals were found dead in the southbound truck.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the ongoing investigation.
Why did the northbound semi-truck cross the barrier on U.S. 287?
When commercial vehicles cross median barriers, crash reconstruction investigators examine driver logs, vehicle weight, and weather conditions to understand why the operator lost control. For the families of the two individuals killed in the southbound truck, securing answers about the northbound driver's actions is a critical step in the investigative process.
"The data on driver fatigue tells a different story than what most trucking companies want to admit. Electronic logs don't lie, often revealing that a driver was behind the wheel long after they should've rested," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
The crash adds to a rising toll across the state. Texas leads the nation in fatal truck crashes with 730 deaths from large truck accidents in 2023, according to the National Safety Council.
What legal options exist for the families of the deceased?
As investigators review the northbound driver's hours-of-service records and the trucking company's safety history, the families of the victims face complex dealings with commercial insurance adjusters. Corporate risk management teams often deploy to fatal crash scenes immediately to protect the trucking company's interests.
"I've seen families blindsided by the news of a semi-truck collision. Federal rules don't allow more than eleven hours of driving, yet electronic logs often reveal drivers were pushed past their limits," said Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal
Individuals involved in commercial vehicle incidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.
Texas wrongful death statute
Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.
