Ziana Wilson Killed in Ardmore ATV Accident

Driver faces aggravated DUI and reckless driving charges following deadly weekend collision
Ziana Wilson, 20, of Wilson, was killed in an ATV crash on a private drive off Springdale Road in Ardmore on May 17, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Troopers arrested a 20-year-old Ardmore woman on suspicion of aggravated DUI, causing a collision resulting in bodily injury, reckless driving, and driving with an open container. The side-by-side vehicle turned off the main road just after midnight, left the path, and crashed into a tree. Paramedics airlifted the passenger, Wilson, to Medical City Hospital in Plano, Texas. She was pronounced dead hours later.
The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries before being taken to jail.
The crash remains under investigation.
Why did the ATV leave the private drive off Springdale Road?
Investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events that led the side-by-side to veer off the path and strike the tree. In ATV accidents such as this, crash reconstructionists examine tire marks, vehicle mechanics, and driver impairment.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Speed remains one of the most dangerous factors in catastrophic ATV incidents, because these vehicles are not engineered for the kind of high-velocity travel riders sometimes attempt on open trails."
"When a crash causes fatalities, the investigation that follows can be extraordinarily complex. A seasoned legal team may coordinate accident reconstruction, secure maintenance records, and challenge insurance companies that attempt to minimize payouts—ensuring that surviving family members are not left facing funeral costs and long-term financial hardship without proper representation."
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are approximately 2,577 deaths associated with off-highway vehicles over a three-year period, with ATVs accounting for the majority of those death.
How do DUI charges impact the investigation in Ardmore?
The family of Wilson now faces the sudden loss of a loved one while navigating the complexities of a criminal investigation. While criminal courts handle the DUI and reckless driving charges, families often pursue parallel civil avenues.
"The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident. We understand what families are forced to endure, and protecting their rights is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help protect their legal rights and best interests," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
Oklahoma wrongful death statute
Under Okla. Stat. tit. 12 § 1053, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Oklahoma applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and grief damages.
