The Morning Collision on Highway 85

The crash happened around 7:05 a.m. on Wednesday at milepost 262 on southbound Highway 85, north of Crystal River Road. A northbound white box truck and a Toyota Matrix collided head-on, and the truck then hit a Honda Accord. The Toyota's driver, a man, died at the scene. The box truck driver and the Honda driver both went to a nearby hospital, and how badly they were hurt was not known by mid-morning.

What the State Patrol Investigation Involves

The State Patrol is in charge of the investigation, and the cause of the crash has not been determined. The Weld County Coroner will release the name of the man who died once his next of kin have been notified. The southbound lanes near Crystal River Road were closed after the crash and have since reopened.

Investigators write down the weather, lighting and road surface after every serious crash. Recording those details is routine and does not point to any single cause.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Colorado usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
