2 Bicyclists Killed in Montclair Accident
Police said a driver struck four people during a Halloween-themed group ride in Montclair on Saturday night, and two cyclists died.
A bicyclist who has been identified as Robert Garcia Umanzor, known as Bobby, was one of two cyclists killed in a crash in Montclair on October 24.
How the Montclair Bike Ride Crash Unfolded
Garcia Umanzor was riding with about 30 cyclists on a Halloween-themed ride Saturday night. Police said a driver struck four people, and two of the cyclists died. Friends identified the second cyclist killed as Rumor. Police identified the driver as Valentin Alberto Rodriguez, 38. Investigators said he left the scene and dragged one of the people he struck nearly three-quarters of a mile before going home.
Garcia Umanzor's family described him as someone who always smiled and loved riding bikes. Friends said he and Rumor had recently taken part in a protest for safer streets.
What Comes Next in the Montclair Investigation
Investigators said Rodriguez was later arrested at his home on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence. Family, friends and activists gathered Monday evening in Montclair for a candlelight vigil honoring the two cyclists. An online fundraiser has also been set up for Garcia Umanzor's family.
An arrest is not a conviction. The case moves through the courts, and the full process can take many months.

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.
Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.
Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.
Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
