Paramedics rushed to the scene shortly after 3:30 p.m. after a southbound SUV crossed the centerline and slammed into a northbound car. Emergency crews pronounced the passenger of the car, Castle, dead at the site of the wreckage.

The 18-year-old driver of the car and the 36-year-old driver of the SUV were both transported to Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. All passengers were wearing seatbelts.

Troopers are actively investigating whether alcohol played a role in the collision. No charges have been announced as authorities await toxicology results and complete their reconstruction of the crash.

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, impaired driving, speeding, distraction, and failure to wear seat belts were the leading factors in the state’s 402 traffic deaths recorded in 2023.

The loss of a young passenger in a head-on collision leaves families searching for answers, especially when suspected impairment is being investigated. While the State Patrol works to determine if the SUV driver was under the influence, independent investigations often run parallel to criminal inquiries to ensure all evidence is preserved.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Early evidence collection often shapes fatal crash investigations because roadway markings, debris patterns and weather conditions can change quickly after emergency crews clear scenes. Careful scene preservation allows reconstruction specialists to evaluate timing, visibility and contributing factors with accuracy."

An attorney may help surviving relatives by requesting preservation of photographs, electronic records and physical evidence before important material disappears, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

Why did the SUV cross the centerline on Highway 3?

Investigators will look closely at toxicology reports, as alcohol involvement is a primary focus in this crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired driving accounts for nearly a third of all traffic death nationwide.

"Legal counsel may address insurance disputes and financial pressures while affected families manage grief and uncertainty following catastrophic roadway collisions," noted Stefano Formica, who serves as a national legal analyst for Accident News and is of counsel at Bond Legal.

What are the next steps for the victim's family?

Families navigating the aftermath of a suspected impaired driving crash often face mounting expenses and complex insurance negotiations while waiting for criminal charges to be filed. Individuals involved in DUI accidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.

Minnesota wrongful death statute

Under Minn. Stat. § 573.02, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Minnesota applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and guidance, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
