Meghan Moran, 27, of Sauk Rapids, was killed in a motorcycle crash at Mayhew Lake Road and 10th Street Northeast in Sauk Rapids Township on Saturday, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Office.‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌

The southbound motorcycle was struck on its left side by a westbound van that pulled into the intersection after stopping at a stop sign. The driver of the van told investigators he did not see the approaching motorcycle before proceeding.

First responders treated the rider for life-threatening injuries at the scene. She was rushed to St. Cloud Hospital, where she later died.

The driver of the van, a 60-year-old St. Cloud man, was not injured.

Authorities noted no signs of impairment at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Why did the van pull into the intersection on Mayhew Lake Road?

Investigators are examining sightlines and right-of-way factors at the crossing of Mayhew Lake Road and 10th Street Northeast. In motorcycle accidents such as this, crash reconstructionists often evaluate whether blind spots or driver inattention contributed to a failure to yield.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Motorcycle collisions often occur when drivers fail to recognize approaching riders, leaving little margin for error. Serving as an advocate, an attorney helps preserve roadway evidence, coordinate with investigators, and address insurance complications to protect affected families after catastrophic impacts."

How common are fatal motorcycle crashes in Minnesota?

Minnesota saw 82 motorcycle deaths in 2022, the highest in more than a decade, according to the Department of Public Safety. While many crashes involve only the rider, intersection collisions with other vehicles remain a serious risk.

What role does intersection design play?

"An attorney can protect victims from large insurance companies and their team of lawyers while diligently examining the facts of an accident," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

When analyzing intersection collisions, safety analysts review traffic control devices, approach speeds, and visibility. While the van driver reportedly stopped at the stop sign, the failure to detect the oncoming motorcycle highlights the severe risks riders face even when they have the right of way. Families who lose a loved one in these collisions often seek independent investigations to preserve evidence and clarify liability.

Minnesota wrongful death statute

Under Minn. Stat. § 573.02, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Minnesota applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and guidance, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
