Anna Melicher Killed in Eau Claire DUI Accident

Minnesota man arrested for suspected OWI after pickup truck vaults off Interstate 94
Anna Melicher, 27, of Eveleth, Minnesota, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 near Eau Claire on June 29, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
Troopers arrested the 28-year-old driver, Cyrus Muehlberg of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, on suspicion of first-offense operating while intoxicated after noticing signs of impairment at the scene. The eastbound pickup truck drifted off the road, vaulted, and stopped in the median at approximately 10:31 p.m.
Melicher, a back-seat passenger in the pickup, died from her injuries.
Muehlberg was taken to Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire with non-life-threatening injuries, while a second passenger, a 29-year-old man, was not hurt.
The State Patrol continues to investigate the fatal wreck.
Township Fire Department, Eau Claire Fire Department, and the Eau Claire County Medical Examiner's Office assisted at the scene.
Why did the pickup truck vault off Interstate 94?
While the State Patrol pieces together the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal median crash, independent investigations often reveal critical details about impaired driving incidents.
Investigators will likely trace the driver's whereabouts prior to the crash to determine where the alcohol was consumed.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Suspected drunk driving crashes rarely happen in isolation, since impaired reaction time and poor judgment tend to compound every other risk already present on a busy roadway at night on dark rural highways."
"Serving as an advocate, an attorney often works closely alongside crash reconstruction experts, requests surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and fights to hold negligent parties financially accountable through a wrongful death claim," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, roughly 30% of fatal crashes in the state involve an impaired driver, resulting in hundreds of preventable deaths each year.
How do investigators analyze single-vehicle highway departures?
Beyond toxicology reports, crash reconstructionists evaluate the physical environment where the vehicle left the interstate.
The sudden loss of a loved one in a suspected drunk driving crash leaves families facing immense emotional and financial burdens. Individuals involved in DUI incidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.
Wisconsin wrongful death statute
Under Wis. Stat. § 895.04, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Wisconsin applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of society and companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
"Legal deadlines rarely align with the pace of mourning, leaving surviving relatives torn between honoring loss and protecting future financial security for the family. Serving as an advocate, an attorney manages critical timelines, sparing families pressure during a painful season," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
